    Vegans vs. Paul Bashir

    31 July 2018 [YT link]

It's easy to say, "Question everything", but the reality is that there are uncomfortable relationships of authority even within political movements that use anarchist memes (like the Guy Fawkes mask, etc.). Here, we're questioning "Cube of Truth", we're questioning "Anonymous for the Voiceless", and we're questioning the leadership of Paul Bashir and Joey Carbstrong a wee bit. And those questions are, evidently, unwelcome from the other side: they seem to encourage Socratic method about everything except the assumptions (and shortcomings) of their own organization. Yeah, you can wear an anti-authoritarian mask easily enough, but it's another challenge entirely to make judicious use of authority in a political movement. This video is titled: Vegans vs. Paul Bashir.

An end to PETA's "Sexiest Vegan" competition… but…

You may be wondering about the image in the thumbnail. Yes, of course, the two people on the right-hand side are (1) Benedict Cumberbatch and (2) Ava DuVernay… but near the center of your field of vision, who is that? She was a vegan activist who briefly rose to fame under the name "Baby Vegan", later changed her name to "Dahliaeyes", then split up with her boyfriend, and erased most of the traces of her former digital fame. In contrast to the artificial process of PETA nominating one "sexiest vegan" after another, she's an example of someone who rose from obscurity to fame (on her own blog, basically) due to sex appeal —and yes, beauty and sex-appeal may be topics we're uncomfortable addressing within politics, but, if so, PETA's coping method is only making matters worse.

    ----------

    (1) "Aristotle's Paradox of Monarchy and the Biographical Tradition." J. Miller, 1998, in: History of Political Thought, Vol. 19, No. 4,

    (2) The "extreme" position (i.e., arguing strongly that Aristotle was "an agent of Macedonia" in Athens) is presented in "Aristotle and the Foreign Policy of Macedonia." Anton-Herman Chroust, 1972, The Review of Politics, Vol. 34, No. 3 (Jul., 1972).

Source #1 repeatedly alludes to the extent to which source #2 has been reluctantly/negatively received by other scholars in the field; for a sense of why this is, see (3) Christopher Kirwan's (negative) review of Aristotle: New Light on His Life and on Some of His Lost Works by Anton-Hermann Chroust, in: The Classical Review, New Series, Vol. 26, No. 1 (1976), pp. 69-70

    (4) For a "simple" biographical source on Aristotle, it doesn't get any simpler than Diogenes Laertius (but secondary sources such as the ones linked above are engaged in skeptically questioning to what extent these biographies are historically valid, especially given the long "pause" between the death of Aristotle and the writing of these accounts): http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.01.0258%3Abook%3D5%3Achapter%3D1

    (5) There is one further (analytical) source salient to this discussion hidden away in the pages of Essays on the Foundations of Aristotelian Political Science, 1991, edited

by Carnes Lord and David K. O'Connor, although I have left this in fifth place, as its salience is of a more general character. It is titled, "Aristotle's Critique of Athenian Democracy" by Barry S. 01 July 2018 [YT link]

Jimmy Dore means well, but he's incorrectly defining fascism. This video examines the overlapping ideological histories of fascism, communism, socialism and syndicalism to come to a brief description of what Fascism originally was (and, thus, to some extent, why it is the way it is. Georges Sorel and Benito Mussolini are more important names for understanding this than most people realize (and, I think, they're more important than Jimmy Dore realizes, too).

Although this may be more interesting after hearing the video than before it, I'd note that there is a contrasting-and-partly-overlapping definition offered by Wikipedia: *"An intellectual is a person who engages in critical thinking, research, and reflection about society and proposes solutions for its normative problems.* Some gain authority as public intellectuals. Coming from the world of culture, either as a creator or as a mediator, the intellectual participates in politics either to defend a concrete proposition or to denounce an injustice, usually by rejecting, producing or extending an ideology, and by defending a system of values."

Nihilism "vs." Veganism (Is Veganism "Just Another Religion"?)

    06 June 2018 [YT link]

People do, sometimes, ask me, "How can you be a vegan if you're a nihilist?" This opens the door to a much more serious question: "What is it that you imagine we must have faith in, in order to make the decision to be vegan?" I do not concede that veganism requires a basis in faith or belief of any kind; on the contrary, I think it's stronger without it.

Izzy Davis is ex-vegan; Plantriotic is a coward.

Plantriotic has a name that's pretty easy to find via google:

Peer Review is Dead: Publishing & Progress (in Science and Politics).

    05 June 2018 [YT link]

If you watch the whole video to its end, you'll get to an optimistic thesis on "sousveillance" and the future of academia —but, admittedly, the thesis of the video (on the nature of peer review) is pretty disheartening up to that point. :-)

I'm amazed at how many "vegans" wanted to defend the practice of wearing leather, fur and even eating meat (within "veganism") with the single caveat that they acquired the product free of charge (2nd hand leather, 2nd hand morality).

A sustained argument on the importance of NOT minimizing your negative impacts (ecologically), but maximizing your positive impacts: a shift from process-oriented- to goal-oriented-thinking, and from "minimalist lifestyle activism" to more overtly political mechanisms in pursuit of social change.
