Because he wouldn't apply "the golden rule": he was doing things that he'd disapprove of in others, indeed, he was doing things he'd perceive as dangerous and immoral in others… but he refused to apply the same rational standards to his own life that he made ostentatious use of in online "debates". Philosophy, ultimately, doesn't exist to fill up a chalk board: VG was a big fan of "Reason with a capital letter R" when he could use it to bully and intimidate others (in "discussions"), but wasn't willing to think rationally about what he was (so clearly) doing wrong.
